About

Dr Samantha Chen is an Australian trained specialist oncoplastic breast and general surgeon. She graduated with First Class Honours from the University of New South Wales.
   
After attaining Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in General Surgery, she completed two years of Breast Surgeons of Australia and New Zealand (BreastSurgANZ) subspecialty fellowships in Breast Surgery, at Mater Hospital Brisbane and Royal Perth Hospital. During this time, she was awarded a Master of Advanced Surgery in Breast Surgery from the University of Sydney.
   
Dr Chen gained further oncoplastic breast surgery experience in the United Kingdom at the world-renowned specialist cancer hospital, The Royal Marsden Hospital, in London. Here she was appointed a Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon and a Member of the International Postgraduate Deanery of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. She returned to Australia as a Consultant Breast and General Surgeon at Prince of Wales Hospital, The Royal Hospital for Women and BreastScreen NSW in Sydney, before relocating to Perth.
   
Dr Chen has full membership of BreastSurgANZ, Breast Cancer Trials (BCT), The Australasian Society for Breast Disease (ASBD) and General Surgeons Australia (GSA). She provides all aspects of oncoplastic breast surgery, including wide local excision (lumpectomy), sentinel lymph node biopsy, simple mastectomy, axillary lymph node dissection, excision biopsy, therapeutic mammoplasty (breast reduction and lift), chest wall perforator flaps, autologous fat grafting, skin and nipple sparing mastectomy and breast implant reconstruction (tissue expander and direct to implant). Dr Chen also performs surveillance for women at higher risk of breast cancer (due to genetic or familial conditions such as BRCA gene mutations) and treats benign breast conditions such as nipple discharge, breast pain, fibroadenomas, cysts and papillomas. She has published and presented internationally and is actively involved in breast cancer clinical trials.
   
Additionally, Dr Chen performs a range of general surgical procedures including removal of benign skin lesions such as lipomas and sebaceous cysts, and axillary lymph node biopsy.

  •  Oncoplastic breast surgery for breast cancer: 
    -  Breast conserving surgery/wide local excision (lumpectomy)

    -  Therapeutic mammoplasty (lumpectomy with breast reduction and lift)
    -  Chest wall perforator flap (for reconstruction of the breast after lumpectomy)
    -  Skin and nipple sparing mastectomy with breast implant reconstruction (tissue expander or direct to implant)
    -  Sentinel lymph node biopsy
    -  Axillary lymph node dissection/clearance
    -  Targeted axillary dissection

         -  Autologous fat grafting/lipomodelling

  •  Surveillance for women at higher risk of breast cancer such as women with BRCA gene mutations

  •  Personalised breast screening recommendations

  •  Assessment of breast imaging abnormalities, including those requiring excision biopsy

  •  Benign breast conditions such as fibroadenoma, breast cysts, papilloma, nipple discharge, breast pain

 

GENERAL SURGERY

  •  Benign skin lesions such as lipoma, sebaceous cyst, abscess

  •  Axillary lymph node biopsy for diagnosis of conditions such as lymphoma
